Lonely FOR Something

00:00

I have found that I can be in a room full of people, and feel absolutely isolated and lonely. Perhaps this happens to you, too.

So, there is something more going on with loneliness than just needing to be around other humans.

Perhaps we are lonely for this, that, and the other.

When I take care of a garden, I feel that the flowers, vegetables, herbs, and all that grows out of the soil are my friends. So, I like visiting the Hartford Flower Show, the Bronx Gardens, and the Durham County Fair.

Sometimes I feel lonely for the animal kingdom – to be around a dog, to hear the birds sing, to be around some “more wild” animals like fox and deer.

Sometimes I feel lonely for beauty and order – so, I flip through illustrated childrens’ books, and Mary Engelbreit pictures, and watch walking tours of far off places like picturesque cottages in the English countryside on youtube tv.

Sometimes I feel lonely for my hobby, which is to draw and paint pictures – to delve deeply into imagination.

So, perhaps for you too, loneliness is not just a people thing, but rather being lonely “for” something that seems like a missing part of you, that you want to find.

This is very well done, Bruce. I suspect that some animals feel loneliness for people, i.e. the mirror opposite of humans being lonely for animals. I am sure that was true about my cat - he and his brother never had much time for each other, but they both always had time to be with me. Thanks!
