The Unexpected Surprise

00:00

I remember going into a garden shop and being happily surprised to see a huge parrot in a great cage. It was so unexpected. To see a parrot by itself would be a surprise, but to see it in a place where it usually wasn’t, made it shine even the better.

A similar thing happened when we visited a paper store that sells gift boxes, tissue paper, cake boxes, and so on. In the back, in a fenced in area, was an emu, you know, an ostrich – actually a pair of them. It’s like seeing a dandelion growing in a sidewalk crack.

Sometimes when we go into a store, there is a dog that lives there. They are always curious and friendly. We’ve seen a curly, white bijou, a german shepherd, and a gigantic bulldog, whose jowls were flopped all over the floor.

Oh yes, and my neighbor, when I was young, had a porch in which she would let her canary fly freely.

Once, outside of a consignment shop, someone set up a tiny fenced in area and was showing their pet kangaroo and rabbits to the public - many smiles.

The Remarkable Book Shop in Westport, CT used to have a giant fluffy white cat who was almost always sleeping.

We keep spare crackers in the trunk of our car, because sometimes a mall parking lot will have seagulls or crows galore – large, large families of these. It is so much fun to feed them completely surrounded by the flock. We like to throw the crackers in the air, and watch seagulls catch them in mid flight. We’re engulfed in the flurry of in-the-momentness.

Perhaps you would like to keep some spare crackers in your car too, for an unexpected surprise you may find.
