Hum of the Meadow

00:00

I love walking in a meadow of tall grasses. It’s like wading though dry water. I can hear the “swish, swish” of the grasses as they speak among themselves.

And then the best part – the high pitch hum of the crickets. Not individual crickets, but all of them united – one unending, beautiful sound. I always really like this sound, and look forward to hearing it. However, it became even more profound for me after I started meditating many years ago. Within 3 days, my ears started ringing during meditation with exactly this sound of the crickets.

For me, it’s the meadow chanting a continuous “om.” And it’s all around me. I’m immersed in this wonderful sound. In fact, to me, it’s more like a feeling than a sound.

As I speak, I literally hear this hum right now. I hear it whenever I think of anything uplifting for just a few seconds. It always appears.

A sparrow swoops then lands on a tall yarrow stalk, swaying back and forth, balancing - a dark silhouette against the light yellow grass - so pretty. Others join. They choose just the right pattern. And the sky is a soft blue, turquoise, that holds the warm air spaciously.

But behind it all, the hum of the meadow.

I love the tall grass that looks and feels like a furry tail, golden delicate. I can’t resist touching it – all of it, all of them - holding its beauty – feeling its beauty.

But behind it all, the hum of the meadow.

I see a butterfly come by. It lands almost on me, carefree, to delight anyone who looks upon it. Why choose here? Why now? It opens and closes its wings, like it is talking slowly.

And green-blue trees surround the meadow, where some hold crows that I can hear easily.

If I just stand still, it all swirls around me, and pulls me into its rhythm – the hum of the meadow.

Do you hear the hum too?
